Drone Imagery Mapping

A workflow from drone photos to orthophotos, point clouds, DEM/DSM and basic terrain or vegetation analysis.

Estimated time: 3–8 hours 5 steps

Steps

1

Organise aerial photos

File management

Check photo count, overlap, capture time, camera parameters and GPS information.

Insufficient forward and side overlap will noticeably degrade mapping quality.

2

Process imagery into maps

OpenDroneMap

Generate orthophotos, point clouds, DSM, DEM and 3D models.

Test parameters on a small area before processing the full dataset to avoid long failed runs.

3

Import into GIS and check

QGIS

Check orthophoto position, resolution, boundaries, holes and anomalous areas.

If you have ground control points, check horizontal and vertical accuracy.

4

Terrain and vegetation analysis

WhiteboxTools / QGIS

Compute slope, aspect, elevation differences, canopy height or terrain indices from DEM/DSM.

The DSM–DEM difference can estimate canopy or object height, but watch the quality of ground points.

5

Export results and maps

QGIS / Python

Export thematic maps, statistical tables and analysis results for reports or papers.

Drone imagery files are large; compress, tile or keep only the necessary outputs.
